Hardly a week has passed since I was assigned to investigate the murder of Jennifer Morgan over 12 years ago that I do not think of her and her family. Jennifer was a well-liked young lady who was close to graduating from college with a bright future full of promise, and I will never cease in my efforts to bring her killer to justice and give her family a sense of closure. In the days, weeks and months that followed Jennifer’s murder, every available resource of the Florence County Sheriff’s Office and the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) was employed in an attempt to identify her killer. However, despite an exhaustive investigative effort, Jennifer’s murder remains unsolved. While I would give almost anything to bring the responsible party to justice, the investigation into Jennifer’s murder has always been about gathering facts and evidence that are admissible in a court of law. The investigation has never been driven by speculation and conjecture. And while I respect the opinions of others who think they know more about the investigation into Jennifer’s murder than the law enforcement personnel assigned to that investigation, I would simply point out that they were not there and did not eat, sleep and breathe this investigation for months and years as we did. I share the sense of frustration that the Morgan family no doubt feels with the passage of so much time with no arrest in Jennifer’s murder. However, now as then, it is imperative that the arrest of Jennifer’s killer be predicated upon facts and evidence sufficient to obtain a conviction. Nothing adds insult to injury for a victim’s family like seeing a suspect acquitted due to a lack of evidence. To the family and friends of Jennifer, I vow that the Florence County Sheriff’s Office will never give up in our efforts in solving this case. I make that same vow to Jennifer’s killer, and I want him to know that although he may think he has gotten away with murder, I will eventually see him behind bars and fulfill a promise I made to the Morgan family over 12 years ago.
