The Victim/Witness Assistance unit was specifically created in response to the revised Crime Victims Bill of Rights and accompanying legislation (Act 141). The Bill was signed into law in January 1998. The Specialists for the program are Mrs. Dana Olsen and Ms Rita Davis.  This program is designed as a clearinghouse of information for community service providers available to assist victims in the recovery process. Assistance with completing the Crime Victims Compensation Application and the filing process is also available , along with referrals to provider agencies and answers to questions concerning the judicial process.
The State Office of Victim Assistance at the Governor's Office in Columbia oversees and awards all requests for financial compensation from victims. Compensation is available for medical/dental losses, funeral expenses, lost wages (over 2 weeks), mental health counseling, and other losses. Each case is considered on it's own merits, and determinations are made through SOVA within approximately 90 days of receipt. South Carolina Victim Assistance Network also maintains an emergency fund for small emergencies which need to be addressed more quickly than the protocols established by SOVA allow. The Victim Assistance Unit staff can quickly assess all needs for assistance and decide which of the two state funding sources apply, as well as considering local alternatives. Without the assistance of volunteers, our program would be overwhelmed by the tide of victimization.
