The issue now heads to the full state House of Representatives, which will consider it Friday.
Protests erupted shortly after a young man killed by an Oakland, California, subway police officer was laid to rest, according to local media and iReporters. Footage from CNN affiliate KTVU-TV showed demonstrators rampaging through the streets protesting the death of Oscar Grant, a 22-year-old father who was killed on New Year's Day in a crowded train station.
President-elect Barack Obama today said Congress must take "dramatic action" on his economic aid package as soon as possible, warning that a failure to do so would have devastating long-term consequences for the nation. "If nothing is done, this recession could linger for years. The unemployment rate could reach double digits," he said.
