A U.S. athlete who overcame the chaos of war in Sudan to become a middle-distance runner in the United States will carry the American flag during Friday's opening ceremony of the 2008 Summer Games. Lopez Lomong, a 23-year-old competitor in the 1,500-meter race, will lead the U.S. Olympic team as the flagbearer.
A jury of six military officers today sentenced Osama bin Laden's former driver to 66 months in prison after his conviction for providing material support to al Qaeda. Salim Hamdan has been credited with five years served. A Pentagon spokesman said Hamdan would be an "enemy combatant" even after his sentence and could be held indefinitely by the U.S.
Stocks slumped Thursday as investors eyed reports showing higher consumer borrowing costs, weaker spending and more financial sector woes and opted to step back.
