A West Florence High School student was arrested today following an assault on a School Resource Officer and a foot chase that led Sheriff’s Deputies off school campus.  Following a routine drug dog sniff at the school by Sheriff’s Deputies a student dropped what appeared to be a semi-automatic pistol into a trash can.  The School Resource Officer noticed the student’s actions and when he started to investigate, the student shoved the officer and fled the school.  Following a foot pursuit, the student was apprehended unharmed off campus.  The handgun turned out to be a realistic looking BB pistol.

The subject was charged with disturbing schools, assault and battery of a police officer, resisting arrest and possession of a weapon on school grounds.  The subject was delivered into the custody of the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice.
