Jennifer Morgan Case
On November 9, 1994, at approximately 12:28 pm, Florence County firefighters were dispatched to a fire at the Country Squire Mobile Home Park, Lot 9. Shortly after arriving, the firefighters were able to extinguish the raging fire and conduct a search of the interior. That search quickly led the firefighters to a grisly discovery….a badly burned body located on a bed in the back bedroom of the mobile home. The firefighters immediately notified law enforcement.
After arriving, Florence County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Kenney Boone learned that the mobile home was being rented by two female students who attended Francis Marion University. One of the students renting the trailer was 23 year old Jennifer Morgan. Subsequent testing would ultimately confirm what investigators suspected shortly after arriving at the scene….the body was that of Jennifer Morgan
Investigator Boone (now Florence County Sheriff) soon determined that the fire had been deliberately set, which indicated foul play. A subsequent autopsy revealed that Jennifer had been killed prior to the fire, which established her death as a murder.
During the investigation, everyone who knew Jennifer described her as a sweet and outgoing person who was looking forward to graduation. Her death deeply affected family and friends who mourn her to this day.
An exhaustive investigative effort by the Florence County Sheriff’s Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has garnered numerous leads through the years, but none of which have led to an arrest. However, this case has never been far from Sheriff Boone’s thoughts and he remains as committed to finding Jennifer’s killer today as he was over 12 years ago.
Now, as then, Sheriff Boone along with the other investigators who have worked on this case, feel that there is someone out there who saw something that day, or who has since come into possession of information, that could propel this case forward to the arrest of Jennifer’s killer if that person would only come forward and contact law enforcement.
