Camp Pee Dee Pride

12th Annual Sheriff's Office Camp Pee Dee Pride

                        Francis Marion University

In June of 1997, the Florence County Sheriff’s Office and Francis Marion University sponsored the first ever “Camp Pee Dee Pride”. The camp was held during the summer in two sessions consisting of three weeks each with approximately 35 campers attended each session our first year. To date, over 2,250 campers have attended Camp Pee Dee Pride.

Presently, this camp is governed by a six member board made up of members throughout the business and law enforcement communities and the camp counselors are chosen from local high school and colleges. The 2008 camp staff has already been selected.

Over the years, the Sheriffs Office has obtained many new sponsors and conducted numerous fundraisers to help fund this popular camp. Other than major corporate sponsorships, funds to help run this camp are obtained by such events as the Bass Pro Shops Sheriff’s Fishing Tournament, the Sheriff’s Outback Golf Tournament, Bikes and Badges Poker Run at Myrtle Beach, and the annual hunting outdoor adventures sponsored by the Florence County Sheriffs Office. Since its inception, our four major sponsors have been Honda of South Carolina, Smurfit Stone, and Roche Carolina. These three organizations have been the backbone in making Camp Pee Dee Pride what it is today.

During camp, students are taught such activities as the dangers of drugs and alcohol, peer pressure, CPR/first aid, fire and water safety, and are also involved in swimming, basketball, volleyball, etc. Off campus activities include Red Wolves baseball games, Wild Water Theme Park, bowling, movies, and events at the Civic Center. Besides enjoying the great food served at Francis Marion University, local restaurants such as Outback Steakhouse, Fatz Café, Chick-Fil-A, Coca-Cola, Bojangles and IFH help us with meal donations

The 2009 summer camp will be held June 8-26 and July 7-24 with approximately 100 campers in each camp. Camp applications can be obtained the second week of February each year by contacting the Sheriff’s Office either in person or going on-line to their website at www.fcso.org and clicking on “events”. Campers must be ages 8-12 and reside in the Pee Dee area. Transportation is not provided by the camp.

At present we are still seeking corporate and private donations to help fund our camp. Anyone interested, please feel free to call Lt. Wayne Howard at the Sheriffs Office at (843) 665-2121 ext. 339.
